South Australia police fining drivers 1km/h over limit

Police are pulling over drivers for going just 1km/h over the speed limit even though speed cameras don’t fine motorists until they are 8km/h over, it has been revealed.

Figures from South Australia Police show drivers won’t be flashed by a speed camera until they are caught 8km/h above the limit, but there are huge inconsistencies when being pulled over by uniform officers.

South Australia Police disclosed over 500,000 sets of fine documentation.

Royal Automobile Association Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain told The Advertiser the figures showed inconsistency in South Australia’s fine system.

‘It’s up to police to set the tolerance level, but it should not vary between fines generated by traffic cameras or those issued on-the-spot by officers,’ he said.

Mr Mountain told the publications the fine system should focus on drivers who consistently deliberately speed, rather than people who do it accidentally.

‘Motorists deserve consistency regardless of the device used to capture them, be it a camera or a handheld laser,’ he said.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted South Australia police for comment.

Officers can nominate a speed of 1km/h over the limit if they see a motorist going over the speed limit, but do not record their exact speed, the Advertiser understands.
